There’s something really satisfying about that first visit back to the caravan after Winter shut down – the moment you open the door, breathe in the familiar scent of the place, and look forward to the months ahead. But before the real relaxing begins, a proper Spring clean is well worth the effort. A few hours now can make the whole season easier, fresher, and far more enjoyable.
I’ve always found that the trick is to keep things simple and tackle the van in manageable chunks. You don’t need to overhaul everything – just give each area a little care and attention.
Start with a clear-out
First things first: get rid of the clutter. Over the year, even the tidiest of us seem to collect bits and pieces that don’t earn their keep. Take everything out of cupboards and drawers, check expiry dates on food, and donate or bin anything you no longer use. You’d be amazed how much space this frees up – and it sets the tone for the rest
of the clean – I do love a good clear-out!
Freshen up the soft furnishings
Caravans can feel a bit musty after being closed for winter, so throws, cushions, curtains, and bedding all benefit from a wash or a day in the fresh air. Open every window and let the Spring breeze do half the work for you. A quick vacuum of the sofa cushions and mattresses also helps lift dust and brighten things up.
Deep clean the kitchen and bathroom
These are the areas that make the biggest difference when properly cleaned. Give surfaces, cupboards, and appliances a good wipe-down with a mild cleaner. Don’t forget the fridge – a quick wash with warm, soapy water is usually all it needs. In the bathroom, tackle limescale, polish mirrors, and make sure the sealant and taps are in good condition.
Floors, windows and all the little jobs
Floors take a fair bit of wear and tear. A thorough sweep and mop work wonders, especially in high-traffic areas. Give the windows a clean inside and out to let in as much spring light as possible. Finish with the “little jobs” – testing smoke alarms, checking gas bottles, replacing batteries, and making sure your fire blanket or extinguisher is in date. Sit Back and Enjoy!
