Staying fit and well in the winter can require a little more effort than the other seasons. The days get shorter, the weather gets colder and the motivation gets harder to muster. Add to that a stay in your caravan, lodge or park home and there are even more potential hurdles to overcome, such as sufficient space to exercise or access to equipment and facilities.
As a Personal Trainer and all-round health and fitness enthusiast, as well as a writer and blogger, I have compiled my top 10 tips to help you keep on top of your health and fitness this winter, even when you’re in holiday mode.

1. Take a balanced approach to your wellbeing
It’s important to consider every aspect of your physical and mental needs to maximise your wellbeing. Diet and exercise are key, but stress, social connections and your environment all play a part in your overall health. It’s beneficial to plan a varied exercise regime, encompassing cardiovascular activities for heart and lung health, as well as resistance-based training for muscle and bone strength.
2. Fuel your fitness
Fueling your body with the right nutrients is critical to supporting your health and fitness goals. Ensure you’re eating a well-balanced, colourful diet that’s rich in vitamins and fiber, with plenty of protein. It’s also important to stay hydrated, particularly if you’re exercising. Dehydration can affect mental and physical performance, so drink up!
3. The great outdoors
Exercising in outdoor environments is proven to improve mental and physical wellbeing. There are so many ways to exercise outside, from a brisk walk to something more energetic like a run or bike ride. Plus. If it’s chilly outside, getting moving is the best way to warm up! If you’re visiting a holiday park, then getting outside and exploring the park and the surrounding area is a great way to get active.

4. Buddy up
One of the best ways to stay consistent with any exercise plan is to make plans with others. Committing to a regular schedule of exercise with a friend or family member or as part of a group can mean that you’re less likely to miss a workout.
Exercise can be a great way to meet new people and make new friends, and the accountability of making plans with others can be a game-changer for some people.
…Make your exercise regime your reward, not your punishment.”
5. The world (wide web) is your oyster
If you don’t know where to start or what to do, then the internet is filled with inspiration… There are plenty of fitness apps and online subscriptions that offer access to exercise and nutrition support, as well as YouTube videos for every type of activity from Yoga and Pilates to Aerobic Fitness Classes and Shadow-boxing. Whilst exercise can sometimes be about stepping away from the screen, devices can also be helpful when it comes to accessing great content and guidance. A lot of online tutorials are designed to be space-friendly, enabling people to join in from their homes – or holiday homes!
6. Your body is all you need
Don’t be put off by not having any equipment. If you’re used to working out at home or at the gym, but don’t have access to the same facilities or equipment
at your holiday home or caravan, then your body is all you need. Body-weight exercise is incredibly effective and can still provide a challenging cardio or strength-based workout.
7. Portable equipment
Exercise equipment doesn’t need to be big and bulky to be effective! Resistance bands are an excellent piece of packable and affordable equipment that enable you to complete resistance exercises without the need for heavy weights. Suspension trainers are also easy to take anywhere and can usually be attached to a tree or door frame to provide extensive exercise options. You can even buy water-filled weights that are foldable until you fill them, making them a great space-saving piece of portable kit.
8. Equipment alternatives
If you’d like to make your workout more challenging but you don’t have any gym equipment, then consider things like filled water bottles as an alternative to dumbbells or kettlebells. Steps and chairs can be used for exercises such as incline press ups, tricep dips or split squats. And with more free outdoor gyms being made available to the public, it’s worth searching for your closest location. Where there’s a will there’s a way!
9. Track your progress
There’s nothing better than seeing and feeling progress when you’re focusing on your health and fitness. Tracking your nutrition goals and workouts, or even just your step count, are great ways to stay motivated. With plenty of fitness trackers and smart watches on the market, and a wealth of apps to keep you accountable, keeping track of your progress has never been easier – even when you’re on holiday.
10. Find what you love
When it comes to fitness, the best way to achieve the best results is to stay consistent – and the best way to stay consistent is to find something that you love. Make your exercise regime your reward, not your punishment. Whether you choose to exercise alone or with friends, or participate in a sporting activity or class, find something that makes you excited to exercise. Plus, once you’ve exercised and boosted all those feel-good endorphin chemicals around your body, you’ll be left feeling great.
