Whether your static caravan or lodge is your weekend retreat, a family bolthole, or a retirement getaway, it’s essential to take fire safety seriously. While fire risks are relatively low in well-maintained holiday homes, the enclosed space, proximity to neighbouring units, and use of gas and electric appliances mean that fires can spread quickly if they do occur.
We always recommend taking a few simple precautions to protect your holiday home, your family, and your neighbours.
Install and check smoke alarms
This is the number one rule. Every holiday home should be fitted with at least one smoke alarm, ideally in the living area and near bedrooms. Test your alarm regularly (monthly is ideal) and replace the batteries as soon as needed. Make sure you fit a carbon monoxide detector too.
Maintain appliances
Faulty or poorly maintained electrical items are a common fire hazard. Check plugs, leads and sockets for signs of wear, and don’t overload extension leads. If your holiday home has been closed up for the winter, give everything a once-over before switching appliances back on.
Be careful with gas
If your holiday home runs on bottled gas or has a gas hob, always ensure the supply is secure and turned off when not in use. Get your appliances serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. It’s also wise to keep the area around gas cylinders clear and well-ventilated.
Cook with care
Most fires start in the kitchen. Never leave pans unattended, and avoid using chip pans or anything that involves large amounts of hot oil. Keep a fire blanket or small fire extinguisher nearby and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is and how to use it.

Know your exit routes
It’s easy to overlook, but knowing how you’d exit the holiday home in the event of a fire can save lives. Keep doors and pathways clear, and make sure window exits aren’t blocked.
Taking a few minutes to check your holiday home’s fire safety setup could make all the difference in an emergency. Stay safe, and enjoy your break with peace of mind.
