At NACO, we’ve recently seen a noticeable increase in cases of caravan roof damage – specifically, instances where the protective coating has delaminated, leaving the bare metal of the roof exposed. In many of these cases, owners are unaware of the damage until water ingress or corrosion becomes visible – and unfortunately, by then, it’s often too late to prevent costly repairs.
This type of damage is frequently linked to sustained periods of extreme weather. Long-term exposure to intense sunlight, salty coastal air, or harsh winter winds can all take their toll. UV rays degrade protective finishes over time, while wind-driven salt or debris can physically wear away at coatings. Once the surface is compromised, the bare metal beneath is vulnerable to rust, leaks, and structural issues.
Worryingly, most insurance policies don’t cover this kind of damage. Unless there’s a clear, sudden, accidental incident that causes the coating to fail, wear and tear caused by the environment is typically excluded under standard holiday home insurance terms. That means repairs or replacements come directly out of your own pocket.
The good news? You can prevent the damage getting serious with routine inspections and maintenance.
We strongly recommend inspecting your caravan or lodge roof at least twice a year – ideally in spring and again before winter. Look for signs of bubbling, cracking, flaking, or peeling on the roof coating. Pay particular attention to edges, joins, and areas around skylights or vents where damage is more likely to occur.
